The defenders that Barcelona have shortlisted to buy
FC Barcelona are currently shopping for forwards in this ongoing transfer window, and trying to secure the stars of tomorrow in Brazil, but reinforcing the defense is also a top priority due to varying circumstances
According to the journalist Gerard Romero, Barca are currently analyzing the left back position to provide support to Jordi Alba as Alejandro Balde is still inexperienced, with a pair of Alexes and Brazil internationals in Alex Sandro of Juventus and Alex Telles of Porto on their shortlist.
Elsewhere, other options include Nico Tagliafico from Ajax, Alfonso Pedraza at Villarreal and Raphael Guerreiro who plies his trade for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
Over on the other flank, Sergi Roberto is currently out injured and also dragging his heels over a contract extension with his deal expiring on June 30. Various times this season, Oscar Mingueza has shown that he is not perhaps at the required level of the first team after graduating from the B under Ronald Koeman, and US men's team international Sergino Dest has failed to convince Xavi.
Because of this, Barca are looking for new names in that position too, but the free signing of veteran and club legend Daniel Alves still putting in a shift at 37 and joining the likes of Sandro for the Selecao under Tite gives them breathing space in that area of the pitch.
In central defense, Gerard Pique could be in his last season at the top level. Ronald Araujo is tipped as a future captain but has been riddled with injuries as of late, with Eric Garcia still wet behind the ears and the likes of French pairing Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti either shaky or surplus to requirements.
To give the back line more experience, left-sided central defenders such as Lisandro Martinez of Ajax, Alessio Romagnoli of AC Milan and the reigning Eredivisie Goal of the Season king Marcos Senesi at Feyenoord are being considered.
It now remains to be seen who Barca pursue aggresively either in this current window or the next, with their participation in the Europa League possibly also alterting them to other stars worth mulling over and debts of over $1bn providing an obstacle.
