Newcastle 'just one step away' from making third January signing, £105,000-a-week deal
Newcastle United have been busy in the January transfer window as they look to bolster their ranks
So far, the Magpies have made two high-profile signings in Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.
However, a third signing continues to elude Newcastle for the time being.
Two players have been heavily linked with the Magpies in recent days – Diego Carlos and Jesse Lingard.
However, a report from Colombia claims Newcastle are ‘just one step away’ from signing Duvan Zapata.
El Tiempo claims that the Atalanta and Colombia striker has struck an agreement with the Magpies.
Newcastle deem it ‘inconceivable’ to go through the rest of the season without Zapata, added the report.
The Magpies have reportedly tabled a 44m euro (around £37m) counter-offer after Atalanta snubbed their first one.
Zapata will apparently increase his income from 2m euro (£1.7m) to 6.5m euro (£5.5m) per year.
This would work out at around £105,000-a-week for the 30-year-old striker.
Now, it’s up to the Atalanta directors to make a decision, added El Tiempo.
“Like a train”
Zapata is a high-calibre player who boasts great speed, movement, physicality and a powerful shot.
This season, he has 12 goals and seven assists from 22 Atalanta appearances.
Zapata’s overall record for his club reads 152 appearances, 78 goals and 38 assists.
Former Atalanta skipper Papu Gomez said on Instagram (via Goal.com) in 2020: “Zapata’s shorts look like underwear, he is so big.
“When he is feeling good he’s like a train – you throw the ball forward and ‘ciao!’”
