Man Utd may give Cristiano Ronaldo a new partner in crime for West Ham clash
Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to start against West Ham on Sunday
Manchester United are expected to make changes for today’s Premier League clash with West Ham. And, after his red card against Young Boys in midweek, it’s possible Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be benched for Diogo Dalot. If that happens, the latter’s prowess in attack means he could be perfect when it comes to getting even more from Cristiano Ronaldo.
It’s been a good start to the season for United, in the Premier League at least.
Leeds were ruthlessly dispatched on the opening day of the campaign, with Bruno Fernandes netting a sublime hat-trick in a 5-1 win.
Southampton kept Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at bay on matchday two but, away at Wolves, Mason Greenwood struck to secure all three points.
And, just last weekend, Ronaldo marked his return to the club with a fine brace in a 4-1 hammering of Newcastle.
Now, however, the first tough test awaits.
United go up against a tricky West Ham side on Sunday, with David Moyes’ side currently on a high after beating Dinamo Zagreb in midweek.
And, for that match, Solskjaer is expected to make changes.
Raphael Varane will likely come in for Victor Lindelof, having been left on the bench for Tuesday night’s defeat to Young Boys.
Paul Pogba should move back into the middle of the park, with Mason Greenwood primed to return to the side for Donny van de Beek.
But a third change United could make involves Wan-Bissaka and Dalot.
The former has endured a rocky start to the campaign and, going forward, he pales in comparison to his team-mate.
Dalot is better going forward than he is defensively but that’s no bad thing. Especially when Ronaldo is your striker.
Both Portuguese players are close at Old Trafford, with Dalot helping the veteran adjust to life back in his old surroundings.
It was amusing to see the former Porto star looking so happy when Ronaldo walked out at the club’s Carrington training complex for the first time.
And when it comes to putting the Hammers to the swore, attack could be the way to go.
Dalot’s deliveries are significantly better than Wan-Bissaka’s, often posing problems for opposition defenders.
Man Utd can enhance Cristiano Ronaldo by picking Diogo Dalot against West Ham
And, given Ronaldo’s prowess in the air, throwing him into the starting XI is a gamble that’s worth taking.
United’s No 7 has previously had joy against West Ham when it comes to getting good deliveries from out wide, scoring against them away from home in 2008.
And if United can give him similar service on Sunday from Dalot, they stand every chances of taking all three points.
David Moyes, however, is determined to stop Ronaldo from running riot.
And the former United manager, speaking ahead of the showdown in the capital, believes his old side are capable of winning the title this season.
Man Utd star Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been struggling ahead of West Ham clash
He said: "I think Manchester United will always have to be competitive and try to win trophies, try to win the Premier League - that's what that club does.
"They've got a good balance of youth and experience in the squad. I think Ole's been given a really good chance to build a squad and a team and I think he's doing a good job.
"He's got a team that is more than capable this year of winning the Premier League.
"At the biggest club in the world you have to win the games and unfortunately I didn't win enough.
"Ole's doing a really good job. I think all managers at any club would ask for some time and if you get that chance it certainly helps you build your squad and get your thoughts over to your team."
