How Cristiano Ronaldo can wear the № 7 shirt at ManUnited this season despite Cavani already takin

Ronaldo is back

After over a decade away, Cristiano Ronaldo is set for a return to Manchester United.

In perhaps the most shocking transfer of the summer, United announced on Friday that they had agreed a deal for the 36-year-old:

The deal is reportedly going to be setting the Manchester outfit back an initial €15m and then a potential extra €8m in add-ons:

In terms of when we could see Ronaldo back at in a United shirt, it is suggested he could re-debut vs Newcastle United on September 11th, the Reds’ first game after the international break.

How Ronaldo can wear the no.7 shirt

However, will Ronaldo actually be able to wear his iconic no.7 shirt now he has returned to Manchester?

That number is currently taken by Edinson Cavani. And, as per Dale Johnson of ESPN, Premier League rule M.5 clearly states that Cavani must keep the no. 7 shirt for the whole season.

There are, however, a couple of ways Ronaldo could end up with the no.7 shirt this season.

Firstly, as per Johnson, Cavani would have to leave United. Or, they must get special dispensation from the Premier League board. That has never been done before, but could the PL make an exception for such an iconic figure?

Alternatively, if Ronaldo cannot get the no.7 in the league, he could wear it just for Champions League games:
