Harry Maguire labelled "embarrassing" by ITV pundits for his England celebration

Harry Maguire was overjoyed to give England the lead against Albania but pundits were less than impressive with his subsequent celebrations, with Roy Keane blasting it "embarrassing"

Harry Maguire has been blasted by ITV pundits for his celebrations after his goal against Albania for England.

The Manchester United captain has been the subject of criticism for his performances wearing a Red Devils shirt this season - but he has now seemingly hit back with a celebration gesturing to his ears following his goal to give England the lead in their World Cup qualifying game.

But his actions did not impress the pundits on the panel for ITV, some of which said that Maguire “didn't need to do it.”

Roy Keane laid into the 28-year-old, saying his celebration was ‘embarrassing.’ He said: “He’s put his hands to his ears to shut the critics up.

"But I think that’s embarrassing, he’s been a disgrace the last few months for Man Utd, he thinks if he scores he’s going to shut his critics up. Embarrassing.”

Ian Wright also expressed his disdain for the move, saying, "You just don't need to do it. It's something I probably would have done, but you don't need to do that because you've got a lot of football still to play.

"Don't give them the opportunity to say 'right, we've got to him'.Just play your game, Harry.”

Jermain Defoe responded by saying, “Yeah you don't need to do it.

"He's scored the goal, it's a good goal, but you don't need to do that.

"What it does is puts a sour taste in people's mouths, they don't like that, it gives people the opportunity to wait for that bad performance again and have a go at him."

Maguire has received a bulk of criticism for his displays at Old Trafford this season. After having an exemplary campaign in the 2020/21 season and for England in the Euros, sections of support feel his form has dropped off.

United have conceded 17 goals so far this season, an amount the same as Burnley, while their defensive record is the 14th-worst in the Premier League.
