Barcelona, Real Madrid in tussle for €70 million-rated midfielder
Often, when one of Barcelona or Real Madrid spot a world-class player, it is likely that the other will join as an interested party. It happened with Neymar, Luis Suarez, Andre Gomes, Isco Alcaron, Eder Militao and several others. And more often that not, one of the two gets the player (because who is going to say no to two of the biggest teams), and the internet absolutely loses it.
It seems like the two Spanish giants are at it again as Sport1 reports their interest in Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka. The German is currently tied down to a contract that is set to expire in the summer of 2022. Bayern understand the situation and are ready to negotiate a contract as quickly as they can.
Goretzka has been at Bayern since the start of the 2018/19, arriving as a free agent from Schalke. After a rather impressive debut campaign in Bavaria, he endured several injuries next season. In fact, in the last two domestic seasons, the 26-year-old has missed 20 games through injury in the league.
For Barcelona, signing Goretzka could be incredible news as he fits the exact profile Ronald Koeman wants in his new signing. At 6’2″, he has a robust build and is able to take on the toughest of defenders. More importantly, though, he suits the box-to-box role Frenkie de Jong is used to playing for Barça, and could be available for a discounted price this summer.
The report claims that there are English clubs interested in signing Goretzka as well, even though his priority is to renew with Bayern. As it stands, though, he is looking forward to qualifying for the next round of the European Championship as Germany go head-to-head with Hungary in the last game of the group stages.
